St. Paul's Church, Centre Rawdon

1783-1896 | 1903-1941 | Early Customs | The Church

The support to the Church in early days was mostly by pew rentals.

The first mention of this rent was that of Mr. George Cole renting pew No. 9 for five shillings. The rents varied as time passed. Long pews set at two shillings and six pence. All pews were numbered.

In 1848 subscriptions were opened and pew rent reduced one-half. Pews were forfeited if rent was over due two years.

One man served as Sexton to pay over due rent. The Sexton's wage was small, when his duties were considered. They began at twenty-four shillings and members of the family served. The salary was raised to thirty-one shillings.

His duties were to supply dry wood at his own expense, to warm the Church thoroughly, wash floors twice a year, sweep and dust at least once a fortnight, make fires, lock and unlock doors, cover the communion table, care for all furniture, and trim and light the lamps. When money was in our currency, his wage was $16.00 a year.

In 1794 a burial ground was set apart for decent internment of the dead, now known as the old cemetery.

In 1868 Reverend Bowman set apart land belonging to the Glebe Farm, between the old cemetery and Mr. Brennen's land for the use of all denominations.

No records were kept and on complaint of Sexton that graves already placed were being distrubed, it was thought best to have land surveyed and placed under care of the Paster and Warden.

A charge of $2.00 per lot was made, and all records kept by the Church locating the graves.

In 1918, a baptismal font, a gift from Mrs. H.A. Shaw, from Windsor, was dedicated to St. Paul's Church in memory of Charles H. Shaw, bugler of the 112th Battalion.
