St. Paul's Church, Centre Rawdon

1783-1896 | 1903-1941 | Early Customs | The Church

In 1903 Reverend I.E. Fraser acted as chaplain during Reverend Parry's visit to England.

Reverend Mr. Zwicker of Brooklyn kindly attended to the needs of the Parish during the Rector's absence.

The resignation of Reverend Parry two years later was received with regret by the Church and community.

Reverend Mr. Fraser was elected. In 1908 a vote of thanks was tendered to Mr. Harry Smith for his interest in the general welfare of the Parish, also expressing regret for his retirement as Warden. A vote of thanks was also extended to Mr. Joe Wilson of Halifax for his general contributions.

1909 showed a deficit of eight cents which the minister generously relieved the Wardens from paying.

In 1910 the annual meeting was changed from Easter to January.

In 1912 Reverend Mr. Fraser resigned and Reverend Mr. Harris was elected.

In 1912 St. Paul's Sewing Circle was formed. The first meeting was held at the Rectory. The oldest member of St. Paul's Sewing Circle was Mrs. Bessie Weir. She was one of the members at the first meeting. She passed away in 1983.

Church properties and monies in 1912 were valued at $6,600.00. A hearty note of thanks was given to Mr. Edward Casey for a generous gift, to tide the loss of interest. A balance of $31.00 was used to install a tank in the Rectory to increase the water supply.

Repairs on the Church costing $450.00 were made. The Church was insured for $1000.00. Votes of thanks were given to generous contributors: Mr. Casey for endowment funds, Canon Powell of Kings College for work, and the ladies of St. Paul's Sewing Circle for their aid.

In 1916 a bell for St. Paul's Church was ordered and a belfry built, but owing to war conditions in England, the bell did not come for four years.

In 1917, Reverend Mr. Harris resigned and Reverend Mr. Corbin came to take over the Rectorship. An increase of $60.00 was needed to meet the set scale of $1000.00 for clergymen.

In 1920 the Rectory was destroyed by fire and plans were made for rebuilding.

In 1921 Reverend Mr. Corbin resigned and Reverend Mr. Eisenhauer was elected.

Contributing to the Rectory Fund soon came, and grateful thanks was tended to Mrs. Leary and Mr. Stewart Leary, who kindly sent generous gifts in the hour of need.

A vote of thanks was also sent to those living outside the Parish for generous yearly donations to the old home Church.

In 1924, Mr. Eisenhauer resigne and Reverend Mr. Miller came. The struggles through the following years to meet Parish deficits and costs of building were brightened by generous contributions until 1929, when all debts on the Rectory were paid with a balance of $100.00, which sum was given to the salary fund. Grateful thanks were given to Mr. Casey and Mr. Minard Welner for generous contributions and to Mr. C.A. Moxon for generous attention to all Church work. Also to the choir, St. Paul's Sewing Circle and all other Church workers.

In 1933 Reverend Mr. Miller resigned and Reverend Mr. Godfrey was elected.

In 1939 a resolution was passed at the annual meeting to express their hearty appreciation to the services rendered this Parish by their late Warden, Mr. C.S. Clark, and in particular his untiring zeal in the rebuilding of St. Stephen's Church in Stanley. It was the earnest prayer of the meeting that Mrs. Clark and her family find in the Church a true and lasting consolation.

In 1940 Reverend F.H. Godfrey resigned and in 1941 Reverend Mr. Townshend, Rector of Brooklyn, started carrying on the work of the Parish, along with his own.
