Origins
The original St. Stephen's Church was erected on land deeded to the Church by Benjamin Smith, Esq., in the year 1869. The first frame of the original structure was blown down in the famous Saxby Gale of the same year. It was not until some four years later that the first building was fully completed.
The original Church was built entirely by volunteer labour of the men of the community and very largely with materials cut and sawn by the men themselves. With some minor alterations, that building was in use until destroyed by fire in January 1937. The original building, like the present one, was of Gothic design with a battlement tower surmounted by the cross and seated approximately 120 people.
